Spot a phishing email in 30 seconds

5 min read

Phishing is a fake email that imitates a service you trust (your bank, Canada Post, Revenu Québec) to get you to click or enter your login details. Most are easy to spot.

The 6 signs of a scam

  1. The sender's address. The display name may say "Desjardins," but [email protected] is not desjardins.com. A number in place of a letter or an unusual domain is a warning sign.
  2. Urgency or threats. "Your account will be suspended within 24 hours." A real institution won't threaten you by email.
  3. Requests for sensitive information. No bank asks for your password, PIN, card number or verification code by email.
  4. A misleading link. Hover over it without clicking: if the text says "desjardins.com" but the real address is different, it's a trap.
  5. Typos and a generic tone. "Dear customer," awkward phrasing, a blurry logo.
  6. An unexpected attachment. Don't open a .zip or .exe invoice you weren't expecting.

The right habit: don't click the link in the email. Type your bank's address into your browser yourself or open its app. If the message is real, the information will be there too.

What MedLiam does

Our shield checks every email as it arrives and warns you before you click: spoofed domain, request for login details, alarmist tone. Known disposable and fraudulent domains are flagged with a red banner. The decision stays yours.
